Sparkling Wednesdays – Being Me!

This week in Sparks we are working on Scrapbooks all about each individual girl!  Today the girls created the outside covers and then hole punched their pages and covers. After they used yarn to string the cover and pages together!  Then came the fun part decorating the covers with their names, stickers and pictures!!

As they were working we took each girls picture, so we can place their picture inside their All About Me Scrapbook!

We are continuing the books next week!  I can’t wait to see some of the finished books!

Sparklings Wednesdays – January 18, 2012

Yesterday, my website was blackout in support of SOPA !

So below is my Sparkling Thursday blog!

Yesterday, at Sparks, we learnt about clean water! We learn about how water cycles through our environment, what we use water for and what animals are found in water! I must say this was a successful unit for us!! All the girls enjoyed talking about water and were excited to go home and try out the experiment I gave them.

It’s an easy experiment to do it your looking for a fun water experiment for young children.  You take a glass of water with red food colouring and place a celery stalk in it. Leave it overnight, when you wake in the morning you can see that the celery has “drank” your water and is now red!

At the end of the meeting we sang “little Green Frog” and all shared one thing we learned new about water!

Sparkling Wednesdays

I’ve decided to start Sparkling Wednesdays aka My adventures at Sparks.  I decided to become a Sparks leader with Girl Guides of Canada this fall and have encountered many fun things in the last few months.

I’ve learned many new games, like toilet tag. I have also learned what it’s like to have your craft fail or your enrolment ceremony be the best thing since sliced bread!

See into the world of 5 & 6 year olds with me, join me Wednesdays for Sparkling Wednesdays!

It’s November……

So after an extremely high stress month of October and a miserably failed “every day” blog post month.  I am still blogging away but there is far too much going on.

I missed all of Veg*ns of Alberta‘s events for World Vegetarian month.  But have promised myself there is always next year and next year I will rock world vegetarian month.  I have gone dress shopping and can’t decide on a dress.  I feel torn between two dresses I want and keep wondering why are they so expensive and should I spend this much on a dress/why am I not an amazing seamstress.  I have continued to be a Sparks leader even though it was alot more work than I had thought it would be when I first signed up, but I am loving it!!!!

K has an amazing report card.  She blew her classes out of the water!  I am so proud of her!

I am off to the lower mainland on Tuesday to visit family and scout out ceremony/reception locations and to look at renting a dress (which seems like an amazing option right now).

Through out everything this month my friends have been amazing and have been there for me through it all what I would do without them is unknown cause I’d probably just completely fall apart!!

Even with everything going on I am extremely happy and have a positive outlook and I know it will all fall into place and I will find my rhythm again it might just take a little longer than I thought.

Soup and a busy week.

This week was very busy, meetings Monday and Tuesday.  Sparks Wednesday.                    Thursday a break and I’m making pumpkin soup.

Yesterday, was cookie selling night, so the sparks and I armed with parent helpers ventured out into the neighbourhood to sell cookies.  Mint cookies to unsuspecting homeowners.  We had alot of fun and learnt alot about cookie selling and committed quite a few faux pas, but all in all we had a good time.  Also, I know have 5 sparks which is great!  Still looking for more girls and ideally I would like to have an even number.  Also still on the search for an additional leader to help with Sparks.

Met with my trainer today and won’t have another training session until the third thursday in October.  So I have homework to take with me over the next week and a half, hopefully I can keep up my activity levels and keep in shape.

Tonight I am making Pumpkin Soup!  It’s a new recipe for me.  I looked for a recipe online and just took ideas from all over and have a pot simmering on the stove now.  Here’s my ingredient list.

  • Roasted Pumpkin (Yes I roasted pumpkin before peeling it and adding it to my soup)
  • Coconut Milk
  • Nightshade Free Curry Powder (I really have found alot of uses for the powder)
  • Onions
  • Olive Oil
  • Salt
  • Garlic
  • Cinnamon
Essentially I roasted pumpkin, then peeled it and put it in a pot and mashed it up.  Fried up some onions. Added coconut milk, onions, salt, garlic,  cinnamon, nightshade free curry powder and turned on to simmer.
It’s an experiment so I’ll let you know how it goes…..

Since I really haven’t gotten much done on the home front this week.  I am attempting to “catch up” tonight on things that have been waiting for quite a while……like my blog……..

A missed blog day

Sorry I missed yesterday, my internet was down…..thanks Shaw……….

Yesterday, I went to my very first bridal show and then out to lunch at Joeys, with some great friends!!!  We went to Bridal Expo!!  It was wonderful lots of good stuff to check out! Entered lots of draws and have my fingers crossed that I win the honeymoon in Barcelona 🙂

Tonight I need to work on my save the dates, It’s my goal this week to have them out before Friday.

Got my butt kicked today by my personal trainer.  Pulled my hamstrings pretty good …… Can’t really sit or do stairs.  Here’s hoping I am in much less pain Wednesday when I have to take my Sparks group selling cookies around the neighbourhood!

Off to eat my dinner for tonight – Sesame Orange Portobello Mushroom Pasta *YUM*  Then off to watch Lost….Yes I am behind the times.

Summer Solstice!!

Today is Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year.  We finally had some sun today but the rain did come out for a while this afternoon.  I love celebrating Solstice and I am making a fun dinner filled with salads and fruit to celebrate the beginning of summer and all the fun it brings.  One of the recipes I have made is Corn Salad, which I got from a blog I follow called {custom made} life.

Corn Salad

Ingredients:

  • 5 ears of corn, shucked or 4 1/2 cups frozen corn
  • 1/2 cup small-diced red onion
  • 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves, julienned {or chopped}

Directions:

  1. If using frozen corn, skip to step 4 and just run under cold water to defrost.
  2. Cut the kernels off the cob, cutting close to the cob.
  3. Put kernels in pot, and boil for 3 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and run under cold water until corn is cold {or defrosted if using frozen}.
  5. Toss the kernels in a large bowl with the red onions, vinegar, olive oil, salt, and pepper.
  6. Just before serving, toss in the fresh basil.
  7. Taste for seasonings and serve cold or at room temperature

I am very excited about this salad because I get to use basil from my herb garden!!!!  So that is one thing crossed off my 29 things before I am 30 list.  I started my herb garden!!

Today I also got great news as I have found a Sparks group.  So over the next few weeks I will fill out the paper work go through an interview and fingers crossed become a Sparks guider!!  Sparks is for girls 5 and 6 (kindergarten and gr.1) and it is run through Girl Guides of Canada.  Girl Guides is a great way to volunteer and make a difference.                 I am uber excited about being a guider in the fall.

May 7, 2011

On Thursday, I played soccer for the first time in 12 years.  It was a blast!  I had a ton of fun even if we did lose 5-4.  I went all out and knew at the game I had done some damage to my muscles but didn’t care because of all the fun!!  I even went and worked out late Friday night, thinking I should let this slow me down.  Fast forward to Saturday, wake up in the morning with limited mobility in my legs.  Fast Forward to completing 17kms of a highway clean-up and my legs no longer know what mobility is.

My daughter who recently joined TREX an extra ops group with Girl Guides, had a highway clean up project this weekend.  We cleaned and cleaned and cleaned, all 17kms, with approx. 16 ppl.  The girls had alot of fun but were very tired by the end of it.

So as a treat after all our hard work, we went out for dinner with the family as we were all to beat to even think about cooking dinner.  We went to a new restaurant that we had never been to before called Mini Mango.  The food was to die for and they had hands down the best spring rolls I have ever had in my entire life and I have had ALOT of spring rolls.  I had the Pho Chay (Vietnamese vegetarian noodle soup), J had Tom Kha See Fuut (Thai coconut seafood soup) and K had the 5 meat (chicken, beef, pork, shrimp and spring rolls) combo bowl w/ coconut rice.  Then we all shared that most heavenly dessert – deep fried banana spring rolls in coconut sauce.

All in all it was a wonderful day and tonight we will all get some greatly deserved rest.  My rest will consist of a cup of tea and the continued reading of Nomad by Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

The last month!

I bought a fish, his name is Sashimi he sits on my desk at work 🙂

I finished a 30 day challenge at Curves!  I worked out 3 times a week for 30 days!

I’m slowing winding up all my volunteer activities!  May is my last month to get all my volunteer work in check!  I will not volunteer a million hours after this.  I am taking the summer off and going to try something new in September.  I am going to volunteer w/ Girl Guides. K is a girl guide and she is moving to pathfinders next year and has just joined an awesome group called TREX.  The adventure-based program includes camping, canoeing and hiking.  K has the opportunity to go to Utah next spring break with her group!

Elimination diet is on day 18!  I’m doing it!  Hopefully by the end of this we will get to the bottom of my digestive issues.

I’ve started using Live Clean purple jewel.  I’ll let everyone know how it works out!

I participated in Earth Hour and did my part to make the world a better place!  Remember Earth Hour can be fun.  Ever tried scrabble by candle light or a game with the kids in the dark or go for an evening walk!

I signed up for boot camp and started today.  I am dead tired but feel good and will not be able to make it up the stairs tomorrow at work but I’m on my way to a fitter, healthier ME!  I’m excited for April and everything it will bring!
