Being Natural

Being Natural is hard. The labels are confusing and so is the information out there.

I recently read the book Ecoholic by Adria Vasil and thought WOW I now have the information to be an informed consumer. Also I loved the book because it was Canadian, so I recognised products within and was able to actually find the stores and products talked about in the book! All of her books are great and highly informative!

But after reading the book doing research online and watching a few documentaries. I was more confused than ever!

Two websites that have helped to make everything easier to figure things out are

http://www.goodguide.com/ and http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/

And a page with a whole list of helpful tools from Adria Vasil’s website

http://www.ecoholic.ca/kick-ass-websites/

I can now easily search products, while I am shopping to find out whether they are eco-friendly and live up to my standards.

There has been the odd product lines like Live Clean (If anyone has info on this company it would be greatly appreciated!), which I can’t seem to find on these databases so I am left to my own devices to determine whether they are good or not, but by and large these two websites make wading through the assault of products claiming to be eco-friendly much easier!

Natural Health Care

I have decided not to test Macadamia Natural Oil as my next product as the company has not answered my emails in regards to the ingredients in their products.  So, the next product line I will highlight is Live Clean.  I am going to to try the Purple Jewel (wave enhancer) product first and then try the Argan Oil product.

Last time I blogged I was going to see Black Swan.  I saw it and I loved it!!!  I recommend it highly, probably one of my favorite movies!

I haven’t kept up with recipes from my organic box as my life has been crazy busy but I will try to continue.  I like making new recipes and finding new ways to make food delicious!  Tonight I used the Spaghetti Squash, steamed in the oven with olive oil, Italian herbs, salt and pepper.  It was great!

At Curves currently I am doing a 30 challenge, so I have to work out at least 3 times a week for 30 days.  So far so good.  I am determined to be successful.

My health issues, I am going to try to deal with some of my health problems and to just in general be a healthier me!  I am starting an elimination diet to determine what foods are triggers for me.  So for the first 4 weeks I will be quite a restrictive diet, I will mainly be eating whole/clean foods.  Gradually I will reintroduce foods and see if I have intolerances to certain foods.

Lots of updates.  I’m enjoying my journey.  I am also excited to be starting new journeys and discoveries in my life!

My Organic Box has arrived!!!

So I went to pick up my organic box this morning! I was excited my box contained potatoes, beets, carrots, shallots, onions, parsnips, lettuce, broccoli, baby bok choy, crimini mushrooms, apples, pears, oranges, bananas, grapefruit, avocado! Since my box was filled with beets, I am making borscht for dinner! I am so glad to have found an organic produce supplier that is so easy and convenient to use!

This weekend is a long weekend. It’s Family Day in Alberta, so there is no work Monday, which I am highly looking forward too! Tomorrow I am going to see Black Swan, I have wanted to see it for a while and am really looking forward to it.

The Organic Box and other adventures

So I was searching online this week, looking for farmers markets, organic veggies, CSA’s, local/organic restaurants and other things of this nature when I cam across a site called live-local.  So I started browsing around the site checking things out when I saw something called The Organic Box!  It’s company that delivers fresh, local and direct to your door!  I was in love, I had been searching for something like this for 2 years but had yet to find one that could work for my family.  They have many options but we choose to go with a trial membership of three weeks and get the original box, the website says it is filled with enough produce for an average-sized family for a full week.  Another great thing about this company is we can substitute things if we prefer not have to have them in our box.  We will be subsitituing the sprouts in this box as my daughter is allergic to them.  So this weekend will be my first time receiving the box and I am really looking forward to it.                     This weeks box has potatoes, carrots, beets, shallots, onions, parsnips, crimini mushrooms, sprouts, baby bok choy, romaine lettuce, broccoli, apples, pears, grapefruit, oranges, avocado, bananas.  We will substitute the sprouts for a pumpkin!

On another note, my daughter had a winter gala for gymnastics today and it was wonderful!  After that we went to the mall and I was suprised with an early valentine’s gift.  A new charm for my Thomas Sabo bracelet.   I received a penguin, it has symbolic meaning 🙂

I still have not started on a new hair product line as the past month have been crazy busy and my whole family had the flu, I injured my back, finished my 21 day vegan cleanse and have been trying to keep everything together but I look forward to my next product and great rest of the month!

Winter Solstice… Among other things

This years winter solstice also included a solar eclipse!!!!  We drove out to watch the eclipse from a field.  It was beautiful!  It was a great way to celebrate winter solstice this year! {Picture Below}

I have now been using Curls for a month and I am still loving it.  I did go out and purchase more products from this line.  I now am using.

  1. Pure Curls Organic Clarifying Shampoo
  2. Curlicious Curls Cleansing Cream
  3. Coconut Sublime Organic Conditioner
  4. Quenched Curls Organic Moisturizer/ 2nd Day Curl Refresh
  5. Curl Gel’ les’c

I may still try the Curls Milkshake or Souffle.  I like the way CURLS smells except for step 3 the Quenched Curls Organic Moisturizer/ 2nd Day Curl Refresh, I also do not like the way this product spray’s out of the bottle.  It is too thick to mist my hair.  I am planning to add water to see if this helps with the application process as I found this helped with the Blended Beauty’s Kick for Curls.  I am also going to try Blended Beauty’s cleansing conditioner again as I am leaning towards the fact that I like this cleansing conditioner more than the CURLS cleansing cream.  I enjoyed Blended Beauty because it made my hair silky soft, which is something I am not experiencing with CURLS.

I still plan to try out a new products.  I would like to try the following lines.  Throw me a comment if you have any advice on the products I plan to use in the future.  Here’s a short list of products to come.

  • Aveda – Be Curly
  • Macadamia Natural Oil
  • Live Clean – Purple Jewel Wave Enhance

Also just so everyone is aware I always contact the companies before I use their products to confirm that their line does not contain any of the ingredients that I am avoiding and that they do not test on animals.  {Also read the label’s 😉 } So….. something may make my list but I may not end up testing it if it does not meet my criteria.  I will let you know if this happens.

I haven’t been blogging regularly but plan to step it up now that the holidays are over!  I also plan to track my weight loss journey as well as post the books I read and love.  And as always small bits and pieces of the things that are important to me or affecting my life!

Below is a picture of the Lunar Eclipse taken by my friend Leo Balanean!

Isn’t it magnificent!

Posted in About Me

Hello World!

I started this blog to follow my journey into the world of natural beauty care.  I have been using natural products when I can for years but now I am making a commitment to use them exclusively.

I am starting my journey with a search for perfect curls.  I have tried many products out there but I want to find an all natural product line or mixture of product lines that make my hair the best it can be.

Now this may sound simple but being biracial it is easier said than done.

I have unique hair as many mixed chicks do.  I have different types and textures on my head so finding a product that brings out the beauty in all of these differences is a challenge.  I have THIN hair and it is kinky/curly so alot of products on the market are TOO heavy but the ones for thinner less kinky curls don’t have enough hold and this leads to FRIZZ.

The reason I am going natural is the beauty industry uses so many chemicals that are just plain not good for us

Main things I am avoiding in my beauty care products are

  • Suflates (sodium or ammonium lauryl/laureth/myreth sulfate)
  • Parabens (methyl, propyl, ethyl, butyl)
  • Petrochemicals/Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH)
  • Phthalates

And YES for years I straightened my hair chemically and with flat irons.  I am tired of the damage and want to celebrate the beauty that is curly hair!

I am hoping through my blogging to share my natural beauty tips , with a thing or two about me (like I’m an ovo nightshade free vegetarian) and my life thrown in there too and I am eager to learn a thing or two from everyone out there who struggles with the same issues as me, striving to be a natural beauty!
